Landowners + galaxiids

Generally landowners understand the importance of protection of native species and don’t mind helping with galaxiid protection. However, landowners are not always aware there are galaxiids on their land (they are small and secretive).

Dairy farm practices have had a negative impact on galaxiid spawning habitat and overall water quality due to trampling of native plants by livestock and land run-off into waterways. However, Otago farmers are regulated to keep livestock out of their streams. This not only protects stream edges from erosion, but also keeps galaxiid spawning sites safe. ORC is organizing field days to explain how fencing off sections of property around streams gives galaxiids a safe place to put their eggs.

The Department of Conservation wish to work with landowners and farmers to manage their waterways effectively to protect galaxiids and their spawning sites. DOC tries to partner with landowners to protect fish habitats on private land. One of their common projects is planting native vegetation around streams.
DOC also provides pamphlets to landowners with information about galaxiids and ways to protect native fish on their property.

Unfortunately, irrigation and agricultural discharge are still major disturbances to freshwater ecosystems. Fish and Game sees activities of farmers as the main reasons for the decline of the waterways.
