Fish and GameFish and Game is a not-for -profit, non-governmental organization that represents interests of anglers and hunters. New Zealand's 12 regional Fish & Game councils are responsible for managing acclimatised fish species (e.g. trout, salmon, perch and tench).
Fish and Game is responsible for sports fish, trout, salmon, and this fish can have adverse impacts on galaxiids. So we asked Niall Watson, chief executive of Otago Fish and Game to give us more insight into their complex interaction.
'Fish and Game' + galaxiids in detailFish & Game are against certain farming practices (including livestock over-grazing, riverbank grazing, and nutrient run-off). These have negatively impact on most freshwater species and on galaxiid spawning habitats. Fish and Game champion a system of covenant known as Water Conservation Orders (WCOs), which they describe as ‘National Parks for waterways’, and have been instrumental in securing 12 of the 15 WOCs currently in New Zealand. WCOs prohibit damaging activities from these rivers.
